Where is Trincomalee Located?

Beautiful beaches and a photogenic Harbour can be found in the coastal town of Trincomalee in northeastern Sri Lanka, which is located on a peninsula. Trincomalee is the capital of the eastern province and is often abbreviated “Trinco”. Especially the beaches in the north of the city, the natural harbour surrounded by hills, the ferry Harbour and the idyllic suburbs are absolutely worth seeing.

Trincomalee is therefore especially interesting for beach lovers and nature lovers, even people who just want to get to know the busy life of a typical Sri Lankan city will find it. But if you are looking for the big sights, you will be disappointed in this port city – there is not too much to marvel at. Trincomalee convinces rather on a small scale.

The main attraction of the city is the so-called Fort Frederick with the sanctuary Koneswaram, which is important for the Hindus. This is located on Swami Rock, about 130 m above sea level. Here, next to the main temple dedicated to Shiva, stands a small Ganesha temple. The visit is particularly exciting when one of the daily ceremonies is taking place.

The Fort Frederick itself is worth seeing, but today it is mostly used as barracks by the Sri Lankan military and is therefore only partially to be visited. Those who walk to the edge of the Fortress area stand at a high parapet, from which it descends steeply into the sea. This viewpoint is called Lover’s Leap. In the courtyard of the fort you can also admire a gigantic Banyan tree. Also outside the fort there are some Hindu temples in Trincomalee to visit, but they date from more recent times. Particularly pretty the Kadakarai temple, and the Mudugayan Kovil are.
