Malawi is a landlocked East African country between Tanzania to the northeast, Mozambique to the east and south, and Zambia to the west. It is a country of 118,484 km2, which stretches from north to south (900 km) along Lake Malawi, the latter constituting the natural border with Tanzania and Mozambique; the country is between 80 and 150 km wide. A quarter of the territory, i.e. 24,204 km2, is made up of lakes, including Lake Malawi, the third largest lake in Africa (580 km long at 472 m above sea level). There are three other lakes: Lake Chilwa in the southeast of Lake Malawi, Lake Chiuta in the north of Lake Malawi and Lake Malombé in the south of Lake Malawi.
