What Continent is Denmark in?

Is Denmark part of North America or Europe?

Denmark joined the European Union in 1973, the same year as the United Kingdom and Ireland. Although Danish, the Faroe Islands and Greenland do not belong to the European Union. The former refuse to be part of it because of the common fisheries policy and the latter left the European Economic Community in 1985 after a referendum held in 1982.

The country shows itself attached to a Europe respectful of national specificities and does not accept without reservations the evolutions of the European construction. On June 2, 1992, the Danes rejected the Maastricht Treaty by a narrow majority (50.7% no).

The following December, the country obtained, just like the United Kingdom before it, some concessions: it does not take part in the eurozone, European citizenship, police and judicial cooperation and the common defense policy. This crisis within the Union has led to the collective acceptance of the idea of a multi-speed Europe. The amended treaty was adopted on May 18, 1993, confirming an active but partial commitment of the Danes within the EU.
