Lamia, the capital of the region of central Greece (Sterea Ellada), is located in beautiful countryside surrounded by mountains and pine forests. A striking feature is the all-dominating castle above the town on a hill. The city area has been populated for 5,000 years. The city was in the course of history various names: Zitounion (Byzantine, also Zetounion), Girton (crusaders), El Cito (Catalan company in 1311, 1390) and Iztin (Ottoman).
The lively city with a nice city centre, many Restaurants, Bars and shops is an important transport hub and a large and important commercial centre of the Region. In comparison to the rest of Greece, Lamia is therefore also a very prosperous city. According to legend, the old and current name of the city of Lamia derives from the homonymous daughter of Poseidon.
