Asilomar means “refuge by the sea” and offers park visitors the opportunity to explore the natural beauty of this coastal park and get to know its colourful history as the conference grounds of the Young Women Christian Association (YWCA) and the summer camp designed by the renowned architect Julia Morgan Asilomar has served from the outset as a retreat for those who wanted to escape the pressures of an increasingly fast-paced world.
Enhanced by the natural environment of the complex, Asilomar offers a peaceful oasis for educational and spiritual retreats as well as a place where individuals and families can spend a quiet and relaxed time together. Located on the Monterey Peninsula in the city of Pacific Grove, Asilomar offers beach and coastal hiking trails, a short Promenade through the natural dune Reserve, and accommodation and conference facilities. From historic architecture to the Forest, Dunes and coastline, State Park staff take the lead in protecting and educating park visitors in Asilomar, monitoring the delicate balance between preservation and public access. The Asilomar State Beach is a narrow, one Kilometer long sandy beach and rocky coves.
A footpath is open to pedestrians. The path is accessible and a beach wheelchair is available on request. Opposite Asilomar State Beach is Asilomar Natural Dune Preserve. One of the landmarks of Asilomar stands at the entrance to this protected area. A mile of Promenade meanders through the 25 acres of restored sand dune ecosystem. Discover the native plant greenhouse, where more than 450,000 plants representing 25 species have been grown and planted in the dunes and coastal areas.
The Promenade also leads visitors to the Asilomar Conference Centre. Asilomar emerged as a summer camp and conference facility for women from the inspired Vision of a handful of resourceful, socially concerned and committed women at the YWCA in 1913. Its historic buildings were designed by the Californian architect Julia Morgan. It has been owned by State Parks since 1956 and is operated by State Parks. Vehicle parking and a bike path are located next to State Beach on Sunset Drive.
The Asilomar State Beach is located within the boundary of the Asilomar Marine Reserve. All marine resources, animals, and features, are protected. Collecting and fishing is not permitted. Dogs are allowed on the State Beach, but must be kept on a leash at all times and are under the direct control of the handler. There are no toilets or picnic facilities on the State Beach.
