Singapore is an island state in Southeast Asia (the parliamentary republic, independent of Malaysia since 1965), located at the southern tip of the Malacca Peninsula (Malaysia), from which it is separated by the Strait of Johore.

To the South, the Singapore Strait separates the country from the Riau Islands, which belong to Indonesia. Singapore consists of one main island, to the south of which is the city of Singapore (Singhapura = city of lions) and several other much smaller islands (Ubin, Tekong, Bukum, Sentosa, etc.). The total population is 4.6 million (2009).
