Where is Wachusett Mountain State Reservation?

Mount Wachusett rises above the surrounding forests and is a unique landmark in the central landscape of New England. From the summit a clear day reveals views of the mountain. Monadnock in New Hampshire, the Berkshires to the West, and the Boston Skyline to the East.

The 3,000-acre Wachusett Mountain State Reserve surrounds the summit and offers an abundance of Natural Resources and recreational opportunities. The natural resources of the reserve include forests, alpine meadows, ponds, streams, fields and even a raised bog. The Reserve offers numerous recreational opportunities, including hiking, Natural History, Falcon watching, picnicking and skiing. The Reserve offers 27 km of hiking and walking trails, including 6 km of the Midstate Trail, which runs from Ashburnham to the Rhode Island border.

The Mountain Road leads to the John Hitchcock Visitor Center on the summit, not far from the Wachusett Mountain Ski Area, the largest in eastern Massachusetts. Wachusett Mountain is part of an extensive Greenway area, including the Leominster State Forest, Wachusett Meadow Wildlife Sanctuary, and Minns Wildlife Sanctuary in Massachusetts.

It is also the site of the largest known area of Old Growth Forest East of the Connecticut River in Massachusetts, whose trees are over 350 years old. The traces of glacial activity that formed the mountain can be seen at Balance Rock. Two large boulders were stacked on top of each other thousands of years ago by the movement of glaciers.
