Where is Padre Island National Seashore?

One island, two parts and many different aspects: the North and South halves of Padre Island in the Gulf of Mexico off the coast of Texas could hardly be more contrasting. The northern half is almost completely covered by one of the most important natural and coastal protected areas in the USA, the southern half is strongly touristy and becomes the destination of thousands of party – loving students in Spring Break every year.

The largest barrier island in the world is 210 kilometres long and up to 2.6 kilometres wide. It was named after the founder of the Spanish mission in Cameron County, Padre José Nicolás Balli.

In 1964, the island was artificially divided into two halves to give coastal communities on the mainland direct access to the sea. The island stretches from Corpus Christi in the North down to just before the Mexican border. To the South is the uninhabited Brazos Island; to the north there is a road connection to Mustang Island and a bridge to Corpus Christi. Geological investigations have shown that the island developed from a Sandbank about 4500 years ago. Meanwhile, the southern half is constantly changing due to Erosion and other natural influences and is slowly moving towards the mainland.
