Moldava. Landlocked country of the Eastern Europe, bordering Romania in the West and Ukraine to the East. It was one of the constituent republics of the Soviet Union until 1991. Its official name is Republic Of Moldova.

The Moldavians are descendants of the Romanized peoples of Southern Eastern Europe. The Byzantine chronicler John Skilitsa mentioned in 976 ad the volojos as his predecessors. In the mid-14th century, the Northeast volojos formed their state, independent of the Hungarian Kingdom, in the territory of Southern Bukovina. The first gospodar (ruler) of the Principality of Moldova was Bogdan (1356-1374), although the legend attributes its foundation to Dragos.
