Flag of Saint Lucia

On Saint Denis, whose legend has made a bishop of Paris a martyr of the persecutions on the Mount of Martyrs (Montmartre), with two companions, rustic and Eleuthère, the story is reduced to a few words of Gregory of Tours.

He recounts that, under the emperor Dèce (249-251), Saint Denis, sent to Gaul and Bishop of Paris “-having undergone various torments for the name of Christ, ended his earthly life under the sword ” (Historia Francorum, 1. XXX.) Nothing more; neither the date of his episcopate, nor the place of his torment, nor his circumstances are more precisely indicated.
