Where is Weirton, West Virginia?

The described area includes the Counties (districts) Hancock and Brooke with the cities of Weirton, Bethany and Wellsburg. It is located in the Northern portion of the Panhandles.

What County is Weirton?

The town of Weirton has a short but unusual history. In the area of today’s town, a settlement called Holliday’s Cove developed in the late 18th century. Over time, she lost her apostrophe. In 1909, a Mr. Weir, north of the city, built a steelworks, which was located outside Holliday’s Cove. Around the steelworks there was an unplanned settlement as well as two other towns, Marland Heights and Weirton Heights.

The three towns and the steelworks settlement called Weirton joined forces in 1947 to form a new town called Weirton. For the sake of simplicity, the steelworks director was immediately elected mayor. To date, the city is economically dependent on the Weirton Steel Company, which has since been renamed ISG Weirton.
