According to legend, the city was built on the northeastern tip of the island of Java on the spot where a battle between the two giants once took place. Today, Surabaya is the second largest city in Indonesia and with its impressive shipyard facilities, the second largest pier in the country. Arrival, loading and departure of the giant, wooden gliders are always an impressive spectacle. Even though most of the inhabitants belong to Islam, Surabaya is ethnically very mixed. The majority of Indonesia’s Jewish community lives in Surabaya, where one of the country’s two synagogues also keeps its doors open for prayer.
