Where is Stone Mountain Park?
Stone Mountain Park (Ponce de Leon Avenue, Highway 78 East, Exit Stone Mountain Park) is open all year round, at least from 10 am to 5 pm. It is the most popular destination in Atlanta. The 1280-hectare forest and lake landscape is located about 24 km east of the city and offers an extensive recreation and entertainment center.
For the main attractions granite monolith and Antebellum Plantation, including Arrival and departure, at least half a day must be planned. At the park entrances you get an information sheet with a map and then you can easily find your way around. The signs in the grounds are good. The huge granite Monolith is said to be 300 million years old and the world’s largest. Originally exploited as a quarry, parts were used for the Panama Canal, the Capitol in Washington, and Fort Knox. The remaining part is still impressive and shows the world’s largest Relief (32 m high and 67 m wide). Gutzon Borglum began this work in 1923, but was dismissed after only two years due to artistic differences – he then created the presidents ‘ heads at Mount Rushmore. The Relief was finally completed in 1970. Confederate President Jefferson and the two southern states generals Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson are depicted. Behind the head of General Lee, you could hide the Sphinx.
