In California’s youngest national park, there are rock walls, cliffs and caves created by a prehistoric volcano. Earth tremors and quakes along the San Andreas trench carried volcanic rock from the eruptions of the volcano over 300 kilometers southeast to this point in the Salinas Valley where they are now camped. Today, millions of years after these events, the place is unique and impressive. Follow the glow of your flashlight as you explore branched caves! Stretch your neck to watch the climbers on the steep pinnacles! Search the sky for California condors, and wander among wildflowers in spring! In summer, temperatures can reach almost 40 ° C during the day, but in cooler nights, countless stars sparkle in the sky.
Pinnacles National Park is divided into two sides, the eastern and the western, and there is no way to drive through the Park from one side to the other – but you can walk through it on a walk of about eight kilometres.
The west side can be reached from State Road 101 near the town of Soledad. Follow Highway 146 to the park entrance. Here there is a small visitor center, but no overnight accommodation and also no campsite. The gates on this side are open daily from 7:30 to 20:00. You can still leave the Park after 8 pm, but you can’t drive in. On the other hand, the Eastern Access, which can be reached via Highway 25 about 50 kilometres south of Hollister, is open 24 hours a day, and there are also camping facilities, a warehouse and a visitor centre.
