Where is Oak Creek Canyon (AZ 89A)?
The 27-mile trail to Flagstaff on Hwy 89A eventually leads through the stunning Oak Creek Canyon. The Canyon is quite narrow, just 1.5 km at its widest point! The fact that the scenery seems so strangely familiar may be due to the countless Western films that have been shot here.
Oak Creek Canyon
A first overview and explanations are given at the parking lot of the Oak Creek Vista viewpoint. Then the road drops steeply over a Basalt lava block into the Canyon. The border to the underlying Kaibab limestone is very nice to see here.
The Canyon opens in front of Sedona and reveals its unique Panorama of red peaks, cliffs and peaks.
Around Sedona, rust-red monoliths and the cliffs of lower Oak Creek Canyon impress. The landscape is similar in principle to that of Monument Valley, where the Valley and the slopes are wooded.
