Where is North America Located?

America owes its name to the Navigator Amérigo Vespucci (1454-1512). In 1507, the German cartographer Martin Waldseemüller noted the name America on his world map for the first time. This was derived from the Latin version Americus Vespucius and took, as usual for continents, the feminine Form. The name of the Native Americans as Indians goes back to the assumption that it was the discovered continent around India.

The American continent reaches 83rd north latitude to 56th south latitude. This corresponds to an extension of approximately 15,000 kilometres. The east-West extent ranges from 35th west longitude to 172nd east latitude. With a total area of 42 million square kilometers, America is the largest continent after Asia.

America is often seen as a continent. But this is not entirely correct. America consists of two continents. North America, which is located on the North American plate, and South America, which is located on the South American plate, are the “real” continents. Central America lies on the Caribbean plate, but is not considered an independent continent.
