The provincial capital of Monastir (Roman: Ruspina), located 20 km south of Sousse and often referred to in a breath with the larger “sister”, is the most popular tourist centre in northern Tunisia and one of the most beautiful seaside resorts of the whole country. 10 km north of Sousse lies the attractive resort of Port el Kantaoui, a tranquil and exclusive holiday village that invites with its Moorish style and a rich offer for those seeking relaxation. With these two places, the coastal area around Sousse is one of the most important tourist regions of the country.

Monastir, the birthplace of former President Habib Bourguiba, is located at the southernmost point of the Gulf of Hammamet, on the tip of a Peninsula. The first thing most Tunisian tourists see on arrival is the Monastir – Skanes International Airport, which is located around 7 kilometers outside the city on the road towards Sousse. This is where most of the holiday guests end up in this Region. The most important building of the centre, which Monastir owes its name: the monumental Islamic Ribat.
