Where is Matara Located?

In the very south of Sri Lanka is the town of Matara, which has retained much of its original atmosphere and lively charm. The river Nilwala flows through the village, where crocodiles also live. Once the area was known for its countless spices, today cinnamon, tea and lemongrass are mainly grown. The city was strongly influenced by the Dutch, who were here for a long time and used the city as a commercial center.

What Country is Matara in?

The most important attraction of the place is the Dutch Fort, which is laid out on a promontory star-shaped. It was built in the middle of the 18th century and was commissioned by Governor van Eck. In the Fort are the Old Town and a small Museum, which exhibits a colorful collection of objects and photos. Today the fort is only limited to commit, File 161as some buildings are used by the government and administration of the district. In the old town of Matara there are some Dutch colonial buildings and one of the classic clock towers to visit. Matara has a sandy beach, which is a wonderful backdrop, but unfortunately hardly suitable for swimming. The harbour with its countless fishing boats offers beautiful photo opportunities. And the small island of Parey Dewa is also worth seeing, it houses a Buddhist temple. This belonged to a monastery that is now orphaned.

The city also includes the renowned Ruhunu University, whose students significantly lower the average age of Matar and rejuvenate the cityscape. Just outside the city is the Weherahena temple. Particularly fascinating here is the brightly painted Buddha Statue, which is almost 40 m high.
