Manado (Menado) is the capital of North Sulawesi province. The city is located in the Bay of Manado and surrounded by mountain scenery. With about 330,000 inhabitants, it is the largest city in North Sulawesi.

The Dutch East India Company (VOC) built a Fort in Manado in 1658, and in 1830 the Javanese Prince Diponegoro was exiled to Manado by the Dutch colonial government. The British biologist Alfred Wallace visited Manado in 1859 and was very impressed by the beauty of the city. Manado was almost completely destroyed during World War II, in 1958 the Indonesian army also flew an attack on Manado.

As the largest city in the Region, Manado is the regional Hub for tourists in the Region. Especially ecotourism is an important economic sector here.
