Where is Mammoth Cave National Park?

Mammoth Cave National Park is located in central Kentucky and includes parts of Mammoth Cave, the world’s longest cave system, the Green River Valley and the hills of South Central Kentucky. Its official Name is Mammoth-Flint Ridge Cave System for the ridge under which the cave originated. The area was established as a national park to protect and preserve the cave system.

With an area of 21,380 acres, most of the park is located in Edmonson County, Kentucky, with the Rest in Hart County and Barren County. In the Park flow the Green River and Nolin River where you can do many activities.

The cave does not bear its name Mammoth Cave because fossils of the mammoth have been found here, this has nothing to do with the extinct mammals.

Rather, “Mammoth” refers to the length and width of the passage connected to the rotunda behind the entrance. Nevertheless, you can find mammoths in Kentucky, for example in Big Bone Lick State Park.
