Where is La Spezia Located?
La Spezia is the ugly duckling of the Riviera di Levante. However, the term ‘Entlein ‘ gives a false impression: the industrial and port city, the second center of Liguria to Genoa, has at least 95000 inhabitants.
Idyll is sought here in vain. Sober special purpose buildings determine the cityscape; the medieval core – in contrast to most other Italian places-hardly anything has remained. Until the 19th century, La Spezia was almost meaningless. This changed when Napoleon recognized the strategic optimal position of the port. From 1808, La Spezia – initially under French occupation, later by the Italians-became a military port. In the Gulf of La Spezia there was a military-industrial complex of shipyards and weapons factories, underground cable and metal processing factories, textile factories and mechanical workshops. To this day, La Spezia has remained a city of soldiers and workers – not a place for the realization of Italian tourism dreams.
