The city was founded in 1536. The founder was a Spanish sailor. He named the city after the Catholic Saint Mary of the good air, in Spanish, “Santa María del buen ayre”. This is why the city is still called Buenos Aires, “good airs”. It is believed that he was referring to the fresh winds that were blowing there.
