Kananga is the capital of the Congolese province of Kasai-Occidental and covers an area of about 847 km2.

What Country is Kananga in?

Kananga was founded in 1884 by Hermann von Wissmann, a German African researcher, on the river Lulua under the name Luluabourg. In 1966, Mobutu changed its name to Kananga.

Today, the provincial capital is divided into 5 districts and houses more than 460,000 people. The Region is rich in natural resources. In addition to the mining of diamonds, cotton cultivation is also relevant to the economy of the province. Kananga is the traffic and commercial center of Kasai-Occidental.
