The Museum focuses on the art and culture of the indigenous people of North America, especially the tribes from the Southwest, and has ten galleries with 32,000 works. Arches, columns and courtyards are the hallmarks of Spanish colonial architecture. The Sandra Day O’connor Gallery depicts the foundation in 1929. The Kitchell gallery at the entrance offers baskets, jewellery, pottery and textiles, while the Crossroads Gallery features contemporary paintings and sculptures. The impressive Native Peoples of the Southwest gallery was renovated in 2007, so the museum was moved to Scottsdale. There, the traditions of the Native American tribes of Arizona are presented in connection with their unique environment. There is also a program for Arizona-based artists.
