Where is Gostivar Located?
Gostivar is located in the northwest part of the Republic of Macedonia. The longest river-Vardar springs in the vicinity of Gostivar.
Gostivar is located in Gorni Polog (upper Polog), in western Macedonia. It is located on the left side of Vardar, next to the Skopje-Tetovo-Gostivar-Ohrid motorway and the road to Debar. It has an inclined geographical and traffic situation.
What Country is Gostivar in?
For the first time it was mentioned as a village settlement in the time of Tsar Dushan in the 14th century. There are not many records for this settlement during the period between the 15th and 17th centuries. During the Austro-Hungarian war against the Turks and extended period thereafter, it had a status of the village .
In the course of the fifties of the 18th century. Century it was first mentioned as a town. There was a livestock market day and the Bazaar was in progress at that time in Gostivar. Before this period inhabitants of the villages in the area had sold their livestock in Tetovo, Kichevo and Debar, but these settlements were removed, and the streets weren’t safe. Introduction of the market day indicated beginning of general economic development of the settlement.
The bazaar of Gostivar was fully formed in the second half of the 19th century. It is believed that it was founded by the merchants from Tetovo and Veles and craftsmen of Prizren, Krushevo and Kichevo.
At the end of the 19th century, Turkish authorities used miderluk to facilitate the management of Tetovo kaza. Therefore Gostivar got the Status of an administrative center, and by the decree of 1914 the Gostivar became Gorni Polog’s seat.
