The city of Carbondale is the seat of the Southern University of Illinois. As the Name suggests, coal mining was the reason for the foundation of the city. Carbondale is now one of the poorest cities in Illinois. To the North and to the south there is an interesting wine-growing area, which is still harrend’s discovery. On the banks of the Mississippi River, there are many traces from the period when Illinois was still French around Prairie du Rocher. The Fort de Chartres in Prairie du Rocher was once the seat of the French administration for this Region. Chester is home to Popeye, the spinach-killing Navigator. A monument commemorates him. In Modoc you can see an unusual collection of prehistoric stones. Located east of Carbondale, West Frankfort was and is the centre of coal mining. Guests can relax in the old Okawville mineral bath.
