Where is Bouake Located?

Bouaké is located in the Savannah in the interior of the Ivory Coast at a distance of 380 kilometers from the seaside town of Abidjan. With about 1,500,000 inhabitants, Bouaké is the second largest city in this country. It is a city with a youthful character, since 70 percent of the population is under 35 years. More than half of the population belongs to Islam.

Our African partner city is an important Trade Center and has always attracted many population groups. Only a third of the population comes from Bouaké itself. Of the approximately 60 different ethnic groups, mostly with their own language, the Baoulé and Malinké are the most represented.
In contrast to Abidjan, Bouaké, remained rural and Africa, one finds, for example, fields with vegetables and rice, and large mango trees in the middle of the city. In addition to the cathedral and mosque, the main attraction is the Central Market: food, beautiful fabrics, handicrafts, spices – a breathtaking variety of objects, colors and flavors.

The partnership agreement between Bouaké and Reutlingen was signed in 1970. Because of the great distance between the two cities, mutual visits and exchanges are naturally less common than in the other twinned cities.
