Where is Asia Located?
“Asia” is a European term. The self-interpretation of Asian empires was based on other images: China saw itself as the center of the world – the character for “China” is also that for “middle”.
Japan has always called itself “Ni-hon”, the origin of the sun. The Korean political scientist Eun-Jeung Lee mentions another distinction: that between civilization (hua) and the Barbarian periphery (yi), with which the then known world was divided until the seventeenth century. The Jesuit mission brought with a world map and a mechanical watch, the knowledge of Europe and its scientific progress to China (Eun-Jeung Lee, “,Asia’ as a project. What Continent is Asia in?
In the nineteenth century, the Expansion of the European powers forced the Asian countries to a fundamentally new self-interpretation. Three strategies emerged: that of the reformers and modernizers, which led to success especially in Japan, that of the return to Confucian traditions and finally a mixed ideology of the appropriation of scientific and technical achievements, which can still be observed today, for example in the people’s Republic of China, while at the same time preserving its own values.
Towards the end of the nineteenth century, the Japanese scholar Fukuzawa Yukichi distinguished between three world regions: Europe and the United States he saw as the most advanced part, Asia in a state of semi-civilisation, and Africa as the continent of barbarism. Fukuzawa, a Samurai of low rank, recommended the adoption of Western modernization if Japan wanted to preserve its independence. On the other hand, the Asian mainland formed a negative model: he saw China, for example, as a “rotten old giant tree” that had to be cut down in one fell swoop.
