Tbilisi is the capital and largest city of Georgia, located on the Kura River. During the Soviet Union it was the capital of the Georgian Soviet Socialist Republic (SSR). The city has a census population of 1,400,000 and an area of 726 km2. Tbilisi has been known for the peaceful revolution of the roses, which took place in Liberty Square and nearby places. As a result, the then President, Eduard Shevardnadze, was removed from power.
