Portugal is a state located in the southwest corner of the Iberian Peninsula and of the whole of Europe, bounded to the West and South By The Atlantic Ocean, to the East and to the North by Spain.

The extreme points are, to the North, a bend of the Minho, to the East; a bend of the Douro, near Miranda; to the South, the Cape of Santa Maria, in a sandy islet; to the West, the Cape of Roca or of Lisbon, at the entrance of the estuary of the Tagus. Portugal as a whole is in the form of an elongated parallelogram from North to South; in this sense the greatest length is 558 km; the greatest width from East to West is only 220 km. It is a republic with a population of 10.7 million (2009) and divided into 18 districts and two autonomous regions (the Azores and Madeira). The capital of Portugal is Lisbon (Lisboa). Other major cities : Porto (Oporto), Evora, Setubal, Almada, Braga, Coimbra.
