Syria is a state of Western Asia (Near East). It borders the Mediterranean and borders Lebanon, Israel, Jordan, Iraq and Turkey.

The area of the country is 185.180 km2 and the population is 22.53 million (2012). Capital: Damascus (1.57 million inhabitants). The other major cities are: Aleppo (1.6 million inhabitants), Homs (780.000 inhabitants), Hamah (460.000 inhabitants), Lattakieh (340.000), etc.
