Djibouti is a small state in the Horn of Africa squeezed between Ethiopia, Somalia and Eritrea. With a population of less than one million inhabitants, it overlooks the Gulf of Aden for an area of just 23 thousand square kilometers. Poor in raw materials, oil and natural gas, it has an almost entirely desert terrain that inhibits agricultural exploitation and an underdeveloped industrial sector. Yet Djibouti is the focus of many global and regional players, the United States and China at the forefront, making it perhaps one of the most important strategic and commercial partners in the entire area.

Located between the Horn of Africa and the Bab el Mandeb Strait, the outlet of the Red Sea to the Indian Ocean, Djibouti (Dib In the past the small country was the territory of the Afar tribes of Ethiopia and the Issa from Somalia who lived together grazing cattle and vying for the best land. In 1862 the country was invaded by the French to counterbalance the British presence in the Af French Somalia began to take shape and Djibouti soon became Ethiopia’s official maritime outlet. In 1917 the railway was built that still today connects Djibouti to Addis Ababa, extremely important for Ethiopians, both from a strategic and logistical point of view.
