Villavicencio is the capital of the Department of Meta. The city is located 75 kilometers southwest of Bogotá, the river Guatiquía and has 384’000 inhabitants (2005).

The area around today’s Villavicencio belonged to the Jesuit Hacienda Apiay, until the Jesuits were expelled from Spain in 1767 by King Charles III and the lands were secularized. Villavicencio was founded in 1840 by some settlers as a Gramalote and probably renamed in 1850 in honour of the freedom fighter Antonio Villavicencio.
