Where is Aleppo
For hundreds of years, Aleppo was one of the most important shopping centers of the Middle East and a persistently disputed territory, which many times passed from hand-to-hand, before entering the Ottoman Empire in the 16th century. After the fall of the Ottoman Sultanate, the city fell under the French mandate, until Syria gained independence in 1944.
The Aleppo citadel, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is perhaps the most picturesque medieval fortress of the Middle East. This imposing structure towers over the city on a hill, with some ruins dating back 1000 BC.
