The two islands, discovered and conquered by the Spanish in the 16th century, gained independence from the United Kingdom in 1962 and adopted a Republican Constitution in 1976 – attributing to the president of the republic, elected by parliament, the functions already performed by the British crown. The institutional structure provides for a bicameral system: in the Senate there are 31 members (16 chosen by the premier, 6 by the leader of the opposition and 9 by the president), while in the House of Representatives there are 41 deputies elected every five years. Kamla Persad-Bissessar, leader of the People’s Partnership (coalition consisting of five parties) and the first woman to be elected president of the Council of Trinidad and Tobago, won the election in March 2010, winning a parliamentary majority of 29 deputies.
