Is Tajikistan in Europe or Asia?

Tajikistan, nestled in the center of Asia, borders Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan to the west and north, Afghanistan to the south and China to the east. It is a predominantly mountainous country where the complex orography has favored the proximity of peoples with different cultural and ethnic characteristics: from the Fan mountains that overlook Samarkand and hide many picturesque lakes, including the famous ‘Lake Alexander’, to the mighty Pamir ranges that cover most of the western territories with peaks that exceed 7000 meters that are reflected on turquoise lakes, with huge glaciers, including the Fedchenko, 77 km long.

It is a multiethnic republic, the majority of the population is ethnic Tajiks (about 68%), mainly occupies western areas and speaks a language that derives from Persian, while a large part of the minority is made up of the Pamirs who populate the impervious western regions. The different groups (the Pamirs themselves are divided into five main groups) share one very important thing for us visitors-the friendliness of the people.

Central Asia is made up of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan, five countries that became independent in 1991 with the dissolution of the Soviet Union and which, while having developed differently, face similar challenges, such as limited access to public decision-making and difficulties in promoting a diversified economy. Climate change will have a major impact on the availability of water in the region. In Central Asia, Switzerland is committed to peace, prosperity and social cohesion and supports projects aimed at mitigating the consequences of climate change. In this it is oriented towards the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations 2030 Agenda.
