The first inhabitants of Samoa came from Southeast Asia more than 2,000 years ago.

From here they then headed east, towards Polynesia, but the first sporadic contacts with Europeans were only in the early eighteenth century, and then intensified with the arrival of British missionaries and merchants in the thirties of the nineteenth century.

Towards the end of the century, the archipelago was divided between the United States (to which in 1904 went the eastern islands, now known as American Samoa) and the German Empire (to which belonged the western islands, then known as German Samoa).

Later, with the outbreak of World War I in 1914, Western Samoa passed to New Zealand, from which they declared themselves independent in 1962 (thus becoming the first island state in the Pacific Ocean to achieve independence).

In July 1997, with a constitutional amendment, the name of the state changed from “Western Samoa” to the current name of “Samoa”, a choice that provoked protests from neighboring American Samoa, whose inhabitants feared that in this way their identity as Samoans would be diminished in some way, so that even today the East Samoans continue to define their neighbors as Western Samoans.
