Palau (Belau in Paloasian; Palau in English) is officially called the Republic of Palau, an island country in Oceania located in the Western Pacific (Micronesia), north of New Guinea (see the Pacific map). Located at the western end of the Carolinas archipelago, the Republic of Palau includes 26 islands and more than 300 islets. The largest of the islands is Babelthuap (368 km2), but the population lives mostly on the small island of Koror (8 km2), where the old capital, also named Koror or Oreor (10,400 inhabitants), was located, and which culminates at 628 meters above sea level. A new capital has now been proclaimed since the end of 2006 on Babelthuap 20 km to the northeast: Melekeok. The Palau archipelago is spread over 650 km (see the detailed map).
Administratively, the Republic of Palau is divided into 16 districts officially called “States”: you can consult a more detailed map of the states by clicking here. Although each of them elects its own governor and assembly, it is not a federation.
