Pakistan has the official name of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan. It is a South Asian country bounded by India to the east, the Arabian Sea to the south, Iran to the west, Afghanistan and China to the northeast. Its area is some 803,940 km2, which places it in 34th place, after Namibia and before Mozambique (France: 547,030 km2). Kashmir, whose borders are claimed by both India and Pakistan, is shared between the two states. Before its independence (1947), Pakistan was part of India (as well as Bangladesh) and had been colonized by the British.
The word Pakistan is a neologism that would mean “country of the pure”: from the Urdu pâk corresponding to “pure” and stân designating the “country” by including a connecting I. As for the name of the federal capital, Islamabad, it means “the city of Islam”, which serves as a symbol of identity for Pakistanis, almost all of Muslim faith.
