New Zealand is an island state of Oceania, located in the South Pacific Ocean and also known as Aotearoa in the Maori language, it is formed by two main islands. North Island and South Island and numerous smaller islands.
The first human settlements in New Zealand date back about seven centuries. Only in 1642 did Europe visit this country, starting with an expedition of the Dutch to the British settlements a century later. Beginning in the 1840s several waves of European settlers arrived in New Zealand, trading with the Maori, eager to enrich themselves, to the fear of losing control of their land, resulting in several wars. In 1854, the first New Zealand Parliament was established. In 1893 it distinguished itself as the first country in the world to recognize the right to vote for women, becoming fully independent in 1947.
