In this note Chile is described which is a state in South America, bordering on the north with Peru, to the northeast with Bolivia, to the east with Argentina; to the west it overlooks the Pacific. It stretches from north to south for more than 4300 km, while the width from east to west fluctuates from a minimum of 40 km to a maximum of 410 km.
Within the Andean system they are distinguished from east to west: the Central Cordillera, which in the northern section looks like a bastion, with passes over 4000 m. of altitude and volcanic apparatus of over 6000 m., while in Chilean Patagonia, it is divided into short chains that originate near the coast jagged peninsulas and islands; the Central Depression, with arid highlands (Atacama desert) to the north and the long Central Valley to the south, is the most populated and cultivated region of Chile; the Cordillera of the Coast, secondary chain along the Pacific interrupted by numerous valleys. The climate influenced by the reliefs, the sea and the regime of the winds presents different situations; the temperatures decrease proceeding from north to south and from the coast to the reliefs. Volcanic features make the Andean region an area of intense seismic activity.
