Separated from Colombia in 1903, Panama is a small republic located between the Caribbean Sea in the North and the Pacific Ocean in the South. It has an area of 78,200 square kilometres and a population of 3.4 million (2009).

The major cities are the major ports of Colon (population 205,000), and Panama City (population 710,000), the capital.
