Iceland is an island state in the North Atlantic Ocean, southeast of Greenland, northwest of the Scandinavian Peninsula and north of the British Isles; it is bordered at its northernmost tip by the Arctic Circle.

Its surface area is 103,000 km2; its population is 306,700 (2009). Constitutional republic, Iceland is divided administratively into 8 regions (Austurland, Hofudhborgarsvaedhi, Nordhurland Eystra, Nordhurland Vestra, Sudhurland, Sudhurnes, Vestfirdhir, Vesturland). Capital : Reykjavik.
