The present Albania (surface area : 28,748 km2; capital: Tirana), independent of the Ottoman empire since 1912, corresponds to the ancient Epirus and part of Illyria,

It is bordered to the north by Montenegro and Serbia, to the East by Macedonia, to the South by Greece and to the West by the Adriatic Sea and the Ionian Sea, on which its sinuous coasts present a development of about 362 kilometers.
