Congo Map
Congo. It was the common term for the designation of slaves from the Western Region of sub-Saharan Africa, in particular from the present territories of the republics of the Congo (formerly Zaire) and Angola, without distinguishing their ethnic differences, so their cultural manifestations have great diversity, with Bantu culture as their common centre. Along with the yoruba and the carabalí, it is one of the most important cultural components of African origin in Cuba.
Some of his secular recreational dances have religious beginnings and have been incorporated into the Afro-Cuban ritual, such as palo, makuta, or scribble. These dances are characterized by pantomime, strong movement, abrupt gestuality; they are difficult to perform, especially as regards the arms and torso. Jumps, turns, turns and a great footwork, together with erotic pelvic and waist movements, close the typology of dances of congo origin.
