Galena is one of the American cities that have their greatest time behind, but are too strong to die. In 1840, Galena had more inhabitants than Chicago. Although Galena was founded around 1820, lead mining of the French took place here as early as 1690. As a major stopover on the Mississippi steam ships, and as a major centre of lead-mining in the town boomed in the 1850’s. Many of the contemporary houses survived, 85 % of the city’s buildings are now protected. In Galena, President Ulysses S. Grant was born, near Tempico, Ronald Reagan saw the light of the world.
