The Aral Lake, one of the four largest lakes in the world is now almost a memory. In just 50 years its waters have been almost completely drained. The Aral Sea is a salt lake of oceanic origin, located on the border of Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan. Until 50 years ago, the Aral Sea was among the largest lakes in the world, with an area of 68,000 square kilometers in total. This area has shrunk by 75% since 1960. Every year, Nasa’s Terra satellite documents the withdrawal of the waters of this lake.

Most of the lake has dried up. In its place remains only sand, salt and skeletons of stranded ships that were once used for fishing activities in the lake.
