Located in the western Pacific Ocean, New Guinea is the third largest island in the world. From the dense and humid tropical forests to the coastal mangroves, the island is home to some of the most exceptional species of plants and animals in the world.
Two countries share the island of New Guinea: Papua New Guinea to the East, and Indonesia to the West (provinces of Papua and Western Irian Jaya).
On an area equivalent to about 1% of the Earth’s surface, no less than 5% of all the world’s species live, two-thirds of which are endemic to the region. They thrive in very diverse ecosystems ranging from coastal mangroves to arid savannas, tropical rainforests and large mountains.
