Japan is located off the Korean coast and is one of the easternmost countries in Asia; it consists of many islands, with the 4 main ones constituting 97% of the entire territory, subject to intense seismic activity. It is one of the most advanced nations in the world, status achieved however quite recently thanks to the development of the most technological industrial sectors.

Japan is an archipelago made up of 6,852 (six thousand eight hundred fifty two!) islands and occupies an area of 377,944 sq km (the area of Italy is 302,068 sq km).

The metropolitan area of Tokyo alone, for example, is home to more than 35 million people in an area about the size of Calabria. This makes it the largest metropolitan area on the planet.

Life expectancy, with an average of 83.7 years, is among the highest in the world.
