Elk City State Park is located in Montgomery County, approximately five miles (8 km) northwest of Independence, Kansas. The State Park was leased by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in 1967, and the lease area covered 1,127 acres for public Park and recreational purposes over a 25 – year period. The Elk City project maintains approximately 4500 hectares of water at a normal flood basin. The lease has since been amended and the lease currently covers 857 hectares.
